Ideas for Montessori in the Home: The Mathematical Mind
Generally, parents are eager to do Montessori in the home and often they feel that this involves the manipulatives that are in the classroom. It is up to us, the practitioners, to give them ideas that are rooted in Montessori/child development but different than what we do in the classroom. The last thing we want is a child to 'burn out' by working with the manipulatives in class and at home. But parents don't always know where to start!
Think about the Absorbent Mind, Sensitive Periods, development of movement, Human Tendencies, and the mathematical mind. These are great starting points to generate ideas for home supports that parents can use in the home.
For the past few years, I have worked with Rising Tide Montessori, a non-profit whose mission is to make Montessori knowledge accessible to anyone who wants it. Part of this work is a free video library hosted on YouTube. The video that I am adding here today is from that body of work. It is the first of two videos that I made for parents on how to nurture the Mathematical Mind. I hope it can serve as a little inspiration for how to think about developmental concepts for the home!
